USA Officer Tracks Down Robbery Suspect

Lawrence Howard, a U.S. Security Associates Security Officer at Citizens Bank in downtown Pittsburgh, helped police arrest a man wanted in connection with several robberies by following the suspect from a robbery scene to a nearby bar last week, police Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said.

Scott Leadbetter, 50, of Oakland, was arrested Friday at Mahoney’s on Liberty Avenue. He was later charged with three counts of robbery. Earlier that day, around 1 p.m., a security guard followed Leadbetter from Citizens Bank at 525 William Penn Place after the man told employees he had a gun and ran off with an undetermined amount of money in his backpack. The security guard saw Leadbetter enter Mahoney’s and he asked a passing paramedic to call police.

After they arrived, two police officers went inside and saw Leadbetter sitting at the bar, drinking a beer, with an open backpack full of money at his feet. He did not have a weapon.

Police later connected Leadbetter with two robberies that occurred last month, one at Citizens Bank on Smithfield Street, Downtown, and another at Parkvale Savings Bank on Murray Avenue, Squirrel Hill. He was being held at the Allegheny County Jail on $25,000 bond.

The Fury: Preparing for Natural Disasters

In the wake of the devastation that Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma visited upon the Gulf Coast, commercial real estate managers must realize that the risk of catastrophic property damage is higher than ever.

In the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane season, risk managers asked themselves an important question: what can commercial property companies do to better prepare for future storms and decrease their risk of damage? The answer is simple—advanced technology solutions and hurricane management preparedness.

Facility and property managers need to think proactively while preparing for emergencies. Proactive planning and management will better preserve their assets and reduce possible economic loss for owners, tenants and the community. To effectively develop a disaster plan, managers must assemble a support team that can assist them in this effort. The team should include the facility owner, insurance carrier, local and state authorities, vendors, contractors, maintenance personnel, tenants and clients occupying the facility. All of these groups have a vested interest in maintaining the integrity of the facility and its restoration, if needed.
